There are many non-profit and community-based organisations in New Zealand, so it can be challenging to find one whose mission and mana you feel connected to. However, this year we are once again delighted to be supporting the talented players of the Wellington Samoa Rugby Union (WSRU).

This not-for-profit community club supports and encourages the development of rugby players of Samoan descent, through organised rugby events in unison with the Wellington Rugby Football Union and other National Rugby Union bodies.

But it’s not only about sport. The game and the union, which is part of the Samoan community, acts as a platform for young players to extend their athletic skills and grow in confidence. This provides opportunities for players to participate and showcase their talent for selection to represent Wellington, New Zealand, Manu Samoa or Manu Sina, but also prepares them for endeavours off the field.

At the same time, it helps young Samoan players maintain a connection with their heritage and identity through team sport, promotes a healthy message of exercise and participation in team sport and events and instils core values of ‘good sportsmanship’ through respect, humility, and integrity.

For us here at Pioneer Finance, that is something we can get behind. As a finance company that started in Wellington, run by Kiwis who care about the community, we were honoured to be asked to be one of the sponsors of the club – doing our bit to keep grassroots rugby going by providing the all-important polo shirts for the senior men, women and secondary school teams.

The season has gone well, and we’ve enjoyed seeing the various teams that make up the WSRU take both wins and losses throughout winter.

There are still some games to go, so make sure you come and support the team on the field, and in their fundraising initiatives. Check out WSRU Facebook page for more details of their last remaining games.

Community-driven team sports clubs such as the WSRU are an excellent example of how teams can bring communities together, as well as offering young people a solid foundation and a sense of pride and confidence. Plus, everybody enjoys a good game of footie!

Watching this teams success has been a rewarding investment, especially to see how far they have come this season. So to all the guys at WSRU, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed your season thus far.

La manuia for the rest of the season.
